Background of the Study
Water scarcity is a critical issue in many parts of Nigeria, with regions like Dutse Local Government Area (LGA) in Jigawa State facing challenges in securing sufficient water for agricultural, domestic, and industrial needs. Water scarcity often leads to a range of socio-economic issues, particularly in rural areas where agriculture is the primary source of livelihood. In Dutse, the reliance on rainfall for farming, coupled with the declining availability of water resources, exacerbates the vulnerability of communities to food insecurity, poverty, and health problems. As water sources become increasingly depleted, farmers are forced to adapt by employing unsustainable practices, such as over-irrigating or migrating in search of water. This study aims to examine the consequences of water scarcity on livelihoods in Dutse, particularly focusing on how it impacts agricultural productivity, income, and access to clean water for local residents (Ibrahim & Usman, 2024).
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Water scarcity in Dutse has resulted in significant challenges for the local population, particularly farmers who depend on water for irrigation and livestock. Despite various interventions aimed at improving water supply, many communities continue to face severe water shortages, which have profound consequences for their livelihoods. This study seeks to explore the socio-economic consequences of water scarcity on residents of Dutse, with a particular focus on agriculture, health, and overall community well-being.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
• To examine the impact of water scarcity on agricultural productivity in Dutse.
• To assess the effects of water scarcity on the income and livelihoods of residents in Dutse.
• To explore the coping strategies adopted by communities in response to water scarcity in Dutse.
1.4 Research Questions
• How does water scarcity affect agricultural productivity in Dutse?
• What are the consequences of water scarcity on the income and livelihoods of residents in Dutse?
• What coping strategies do communities in Dutse employ to mitigate the effects of water scarcity?
1.5 Research Hypothesis
• H1: Water scarcity has a significant negative impact on agricultural productivity in Dutse.
• H2: Water scarcity leads to reduced income and livelihood opportunities for residents of Dutse.
• H3: Communities in Dutse adopt coping strategies that alleviate, but do not fully mitigate, the effects of water scarcity.
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study will provide a deeper understanding of the socio-economic effects of water scarcity on rural communities, particularly in Dutse. The findings will be valuable for local government officials, water resource management agencies, and NGOs working on water access and climate adaptation. Additionally, the study will contribute to the formulation of strategies to improve water access and support livelihoods in water-scarce regions of Nigeria (Ibrahim & Usman, 2024).
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on the impact of water scarcity on livelihoods in Dutse Local Government Area, particularly in relation to agriculture and income. Limitations include challenges in collecting accurate data on water availability and its direct effects on the local economy, as well as potential biases in self-reported coping strategies.
1.8 Operational Definition of Terms
• Water Scarcity: The lack of sufficient fresh water resources to meet the demands of the population.
• Livelihoods: The means by which people secure the necessities of life, including food, income, and shelter.
• Coping Strategies: Methods or actions taken by individuals or communities to manage or adapt to challenges, such as water scarcity.
